Sandwich or Sand wic, Saxon for settlement on the sand, is one of England's oldest medieval towns and a cinque port. Sandwich has much history and many ancient buildings. The town now is a thriving community and regenerating with many new individual shops opening, from antique shops to small boutiques such as Lady Elegance & Chaps. Sandwich is a lovely place to visit with everything within walking distance and many excellent places to eat and stay.  The Magna Carta for Sandwich has recently been discovered and is very exciting find for this ancient town.  The quay has recently been refurbished and is a beautiful place to walk and sit to enjoy the river side.  We have famous  golf courses such as Royal St George's and Princes so Sandwich town is an excellent place to shop for golfers wanting something different.

In 2012 Sandwich celebrated the anniversary of the "invention" of the "sandwich", 250 years since the 4th Earl of Sandwich requested meat between bread to be brought to him whilst playing a game of cards, so while everyone surely has heard of a sandwich probably not many know where this actually came from.

Sandwich itself, has a population of around 4,500, but it is surrounded by small villages, such as Eastry, Ash, Worth and Woodnesborough, which are often regarded as part of the Sandwich area. The larger towns of Canterbury, Deal, Dover and Thanet (Ramsgate, Broadstairs & Margate) and their shops and entertainments are within easy reach by road and rail. Sandwich is now about two miles from the sea, but the River Stour used to be large enough for big trading and war ships to sail to and from the quay. This large harbour was called Sandwich Haven.

It was also large enough for invading ships, and the town was invaded many times in the past. For example, in 1457, the town was attacked by 4,000 Frenchmen (mainly from Honfleur) under Marshal Pierre de Breze or as English accounts call him, Peter Brassey. The Mayor of Sandwich, John Drury, was killed along with many citizens. In memory of this event, the Mayor of Sandwich still wears a black robe.

All is forgiven today however, and the town of Honfleur is now a twin town of Sandwich.

Sandwich is a wonderful town for specialist shops, history, golf, eating, please come and visit!
